Interview: talking to Antoine Graat

Just to introduce myself…

In each new edition of De Veer we would like to introduce one or two members of the program office. The program office is a group of colleagues who help give form to the new program aimed at long-term employability. Why exactly do they find long-term employability important and what drives them? In this edition we talk to Antoine Graat.

What tips on Safe Together would you give to your colleagues?
As far as physical safety is concerned, I would advise my colleagues to make use of the personal protection aids available. My understanding of social safety is the importance of a good atmosphere. To keep it good, show vulnerability by, for example, making yourself the butt of a joke. Atmosphere is all important. Sometimes it is good to make fun of yourself, if this improves atmosphere in the group. Now and then let go of the reins!

Do you have a tip on In Development Together/In Balance Together?
Be open to change and accept it. If you are chosen for a certain change, go with it! In any case, at Marel it is possible to acquire certain knowledge by, for example, taking courses. Make use of this option. I recently took part in the Mindfulness workshop. We were a group of 18 to 20 persons. It was good to hear certain things; for example the connection between positive and negative things. How much you sometimes swing towards the negative, you then swing towards the positive. It was really handy to get a good insight into yourself. At the end of the day, it’s up to you to make something out of it.

Is there a tip you want to add on Healthy Together?
Ride to work, if you don’t live too far away! That’s what I do. I live some 5.5 km from work and bike to work every day. That’s great! After work you can then go quietly home.  It’s one way of emptying your head after a long day at work; a moment of relaxation, which is particularly enjoyable when the weather is fine! Do you live within 10 km of work?  If so, use your bike, if you are able. I also do quite a lot of sport. I regularly walk a few kilometers. This makes me feel better and more energetic. You take this feeling with you to work.
