Blog: laughing is really good for you!

Do you remember the last time your stomach hurt from laughing, tears ran over your cheeks and you were left gasping for breath?  You almost couldn’t stop laughing?  A good laugh will often give us a good feeling but do we make time for it?  And why is it good for us?

Research has shown that we all laugh less.  In our busy lives, it is quite simply “forgotten”, despite laughing being so important for us! The statement “laughing is good for you” did not just come out of the blue.  Laughing is not just very pleasurable but has many other benefits.

Less stress and more relaxation
In today’s world, stress is more the norm than an exception.  Stress is, however, not always good for you.  The stress hormone cortisol narrows blood vessels and reduces blood circulation. When you laugh, cortisol levels become lower and your blood vessels can expand again.  When you laugh, your body also makes the “happy” hormones endorphin, serotonin and dopamine.  These hormones help you relax and give you that cheerful and carefree feeling.  This also has a positive effect on your blood pressure.

Better immune system
Laughing makes for a better immune system.  When you laugh, you make extra white blood cells and these protect you against infection. You don’t fall ill so quickly.

You become more attractive and feel good as well
When you laugh, you exercise your jaw muscles.  You are more radiant.  A smile on your face makes you more attractive and you come over as a friendlier person.  Laughing is also a boost for your self-confidence.  Even a fake smile makes you feel that little bit surer about yourself.

It brings people together
Finally, people are social animals. A smile on your face signals openness and makes you more approachable for others.  This means that people feel more comfortable with you and will be more likely to start talking to you.

Laughing is too pleasant and healthy to give up.  The next time you open your busy diary, plan in time for a laugh.  Set something up with friends, read a good story or laugh at yourself in the mirror.
