Talking about pressure of work, autonomy and support

There are three categories which can influence the pressure of work someone experiences
  • The amount of work pressure. Amongst other things, pressure of work is about the quantity of work, time pressure, the type of activity causing the pressure and the influence of other factors such as a stressful home situation.
  • Autonomy. The freedom someone feels influences their enjoyment of work. Being able to take their own decisions and keeping control of activities can ease pressure of work.
  • Social support. Is an employee listened to and is there a safety net when there is extra pressure? The role of managers and colleagues is very important here.

Avoid the situation where pressure of work becomes too much and start talking to the employee. This is best on a one to one basis. But what questions do you then ask? We give you three lists with suggested questions.
