Blog: change your life. Read a book!

Reading is good for you.  Books help you relax and develop as well.  Which books will help you further your personal development? We give you some reading tips and the chance to win a book voucher.

Research has shown that reading helps you grow your capacity for empathy and improves your memory.  Regular reading makes for better concentration.  You can also increase your knowledge, at home in your chair! We have picked three books for you which can help you to develop yourself.

Grip
Sometimes your pressure of work is such that you lose oversight.  “Grip” helps you bring order to the chaos.  The book lets you peep into the working life of the author Rick Pastor, product manager at Blendle (the site where you can buy loose articles from newspapers and magazines).  “Grip” consists of three parts.  The first part of the book deals with how you can get control over your busy working days.  We get diary tips, examples of “to-do” lists and the advice to plan Tuesdays as your fixed “blitzing” day.  Parts two and three of the book deal with making a plan for the year and looking for a buddy with whom you can discuss your goals.

21 lessons on the 21st century
In “21 Lessons on the 21st Century” the Israeli university history professor Yval Noel Harari gives his vision of the world.  He discusses different problems which people have to deal with today.  Think of matters such as privacy, technological change, immigration, terrorism, nationalism and fake news.  He also makes forecasts about the future, including supermen, climate change and mass unemployment.  In his book, Harari does not so much come up with solutions as provide clarity on the topics, making clear what he thinks of it all.  The book is an easy read and gives you more understanding of today’s company.  That’s just fine in a world where you can make good use of some interpretation and background information.

The seven qualities of effctive leadership
“Well; that’s how I am now.”  “Born for a dime you will never amount to a quarter”  The American  author and businessman Stephen Covey deals with  these and many more assumptions in his book “The Seven Characteristics of Effective Leadership”.  The Dutch title is somewhat misleading.  This is not a book for managers but gives all employees tips on how they can give their lives more direction.  In his book Covey teaches you how using seven characteristics can improve the quality of both your working and your private life.  He writes:  be pro-active and take responsibility for your own life!  Live with a clear picture of your end goal.  Know where you are going so that you better understand where you are now and can therefore take steps in the right direction.  Covey gives an example: “you can work extremely hard to get up the company ladder and then discover at the end  of your life that the ladder is against the wrong wall.” Covey gives advice on dealing with time effectively, being an empathetic listener and looking after yourself.  Not without reason, “The Seven Characteristics of Effective Management” has been a best seller for years.
